"My son, if you receive my words, and treasure my commands within you, so that you incline your ear to wisdom, and apply your heart to understanding; yes, if you cry out for discernment, and lift up your voice for understanding..." Proverbs 2:1-3 Wisdom, understanding, and discernment don't come to us automatically. Look at the command words here: receive, treasure, incline, apply, cry out, lift up your voice. Walking with the Lord is not to be a passive walk. First, we are to TREASURE the Word of God above all and receive it. And then listen to it. And then apply it. Wisdom, understanding, and discernment must be requested, prayed for, cried out for. Or ...you stay in your own "wisdom." And God calls the wisdom of the world “foolishness.” "For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God." 1st Corinthians 3:19 Hear the Word of the Lord! Until one obtains wisdom from God, he remains in what God calls foolishness. The Word of God is not to be read just to say one has read it. Oh, there is SO much more to it than that! It is the most precious thing God has given to us, the Manufacturer's Handbook, the answer to every question and the blueprint for life. It is to be treasured above all, above any other thing important to us in life. vs 4-5: "IF you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hidden treasures, THEN you will understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God." IF you seek ...IF you search... People run to seek all that they treasure, and they put their life energies into these pursuits. But FAR more important is the Word of God. We are directed to seek for the hidden treasures above all else, to expend our energies here and not in the world, AND THEN one will come to realize how vast and important is the fear of the Lord, and once found, then comes the knowledge of God. “But on this one will I look, on him who is poor and of a contrite spirit, and who trembles at my WORD. Isaiah 66:2 Brother and sister, do you tremble at the Word of God? Do you treasure it above all else? Do you esteem it enough to spend time in it daily? If you do, then this is what you can expect from him: "He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; he is a shield to those who walk uprightly; he guards the paths of justice, and preserves the way of his saints." Proverbs 2:7-8 If ever there was an evil time, we live in it now. The gates of hell have been opened and the saints of God face great dangers. If ever there was a time when the believer needed sound wisdom, understanding, and discernment - it is now. Therefore seek the Lord WITH ALL YOUR HEART and immerse yourself in his Word. Search it for wisdom and understanding. Ask for discernment. Seek it out. THEN - he will be your shield, he will guard your paths, and he will preserve your way; and you will find that wisdom, once obtained, is the most precious gift of all.
